Eyebrows gathered together like thread needled through cloth ruched tight, she pleads under her breath, BEGGING Sam to hold on while she navigates them out of the woods and finally, into the porch-light glow of someone’s house. Her knuckles pound the door so much the skin turns pink with blood.
God. God. God. Please.
“ Is anyone in there?! Please! My friend is dying! We need HELP! ” Not again. Not now.Damn it! She swallows. Her throat is tight, neck sore from where whiplash stole it back.
With one arm holding Sam’s prone body up, Lara winds back and slams the bottom of one hiking boot into the bottom-hand corner of the door. Again. Again. Weathered away, it splinters, and gives, allowing her to break through completely.
The warmth c o l l a p s e s her.“ Sam! Sam, please…! ” Frantic eyes leap up and scan her surroundings. There must be a first-aid kit here somewhere.
